COMMUNITY AND EDUCATIONAL SEEDS PLANTED BY LEADERSHIP BURBANK

On April 22nd, Earth Day was celebrated at Magnolia Park School with the dedication of a garden that will serve the school as a “living laboratory” where students will learn about botany and biology.  The creation of the garden for the school was a project taken on by the Leadership Burbank class of 2005.

Leadership Burbank is a unique and dynamic ten-month program that identifies and trains future leaders.  The participants are educated about the intricacies of how Burbank is managed and the numerous services provided by the city. All graduates are encouraged to become involved in helping to create a diverse and vibrant community.  As an example, every year the participants choose one or two community projects to complete.

The 2005 class participants chose the development of a garden at Magnolia Park School as one of their projects.  The garden project was selected with the encouragement and research of Kreigh Hampel, the Recycling Coordinator for the City of Burbank, and a Leadership Burbank graduate.  Last year’s project, Mountain View Beautification Project, won the California Park and Recreation Society, District XIV Community Service Award.

Dennis O’Connor, a participant in Leadership Burbank said, “This is an example of true community effort.  The support we have received from organizations, businesses and individuals in the community has been great, and it makes you realize the appeal of this city.”  The project was made possible by the corporate sponsorships of IKEA and The Walt Disney Company and the support of the Burbank Unified School District, Dilbeck Realtors, Hilton Burbank, Noon Kiwanis, Nickelodeon, Glendale Garden Supply, Lowe’s, Mission Tile West, Xpert Auto Repair, and The Luckman Partnership. The class received expert advice and volunteer support from the school district’s own Mark Clarke, Grounds Supervisor and Dick Moskun, Environmental Garden Coordinator, and the teachers at Magnolia Park.

The dedication ceremony was held April 22nd at 9:00 am at Magnolia Park School located at 827 Avon Street Burbank.  The Master of Ceremonies for the dedication was be Carolyn Lawrence, a Leadership Burbank participant, and the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants’ sidekick, Sandy Cheeks.  IKEA conducted an educational planting with the students, and the IKEA Moose was there to entertain the guests and make sure there were plenty of smiles. The non-profit group, Tree People, also involved the students in a tree planting ceremony.  Representatives from IKEA, Leadership Burbank, Burbank Unified School District, and the City of Burbank, were on hand with other members of the community to celebrate the dedication.
